A guidebook to help you explore the business analyst profession and land an entry-level business analyst positionI’m excited to announce that without further ado, I’ve published How to Start a Business Analyst Career, an eBook to help professionals become business analysts.

If you’ve been following my posts on the eBook, you know that the idea for the book crystallized after I received several email and LinkedIn requests looking for information and advice on becoming a business analyst. This got me started down a path to help other professionals find their way toward BA careers.

As part of research the book, I interviewed several successful business analysts. I want to thank them today (blog URLs and Twitter handles listed as available):

Combining their insights with my own experience, this eBook is truly a guidebook to help professionals evaluate BA careers, build professional experiences and build professional relationships. The book takes you on a path toward accumulating relevant job experiences, exploring online resources, and building up your professional networking skills. Finally it helps the potential business analyst through the logistics of finding a job by exploring the positions available, updating their resume, conducting a job search, and preparing for an interview.

Special thanks go to Jonathan Babcock, Doug Goldberg, and Ellen Gottesdiener for providing detailed feedback on a draft copy and helping me improve the work overall.

I also want to thank Kathleen Barret, CEO of the International Institute of Business Analysis (R) for reviewing the final work and providing her personal recommendation, which can be found on the How to Start a BA Career landing page.

I look forward to hearing your feedback as well, which is why comments are now open on that page.

What’s in it for you?

If you host a local IIBA chapter meeting or other local professional meeting, I will provide you with a complimentary copy to use as a door prize or raffle prize. Please contact me for details.

I will be making the eBook available through an affiliate program, enabling you or your organization to share revenue for any purchases made from your website. More information is available on the affiliate page.

If you are a Bridging the Gap eNewsletter subscriber, you will be receiving details about a special discount in this Friday’s email newsletter.

Again, a big thank you to everyone who helped me along this journey.  The process of researching and writing has been truly rewarding. It gave me a great excuse to speak one-on-one with some great people and dig deeper into the profession. If the experience of sharing this with others is half as fulfilling as the writing process, I will consider myself a lucky person indeed.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can help you and your career or answer any questions about the book. And consider joining us on Linked In where we specifically discuss “Starting a Business Analyst Career”.

Hi,

I have a new role as a Business Analyst and need some tips as far as
the daily tasks and process of a BA. What areas should I be really strong in and how do I really validate that the the business requirements I gathered from stakeholders are complete? How do I accurately convert those requirements in to functional and then technical requirements? Will I be be the loan ranger in doing this or will this be a group effort?

Hi AJ,
Congratulations on your new role! This is a big set of questions and I’ll submit it to the Help a BA! list. Hopefully we’ll be able to answer it soon.

You might want to check out some of the posts under requirements validation and business analyst roles and responsibilities to get you started.

Thanks,
Laura
