Tackling the BA Job Market – FAQ

What all is included?

To view the complete course contents, download the Tackling the BA Job Market course abstract.

What makes this a workshop?

You’ll receive 10 audio lessons, averaging 10 to 20 minutes each. Each lesson is accompanied by a full-length PDF article that includes visuals and detailed examples from the lesson. Also included are worksheets, templates, and checklists you can use to apply the objectives of each lesson to your job search.

This is a lot like participating in a webinar or online course, the difference being that there are logical breaks where I’ll ask you to apply what you learned as part of building your personalized job search plan. What we might accomplish in a 2-day workshop, you can accomplish on your own schedule in the windows of time that work best for you.

By proceeding through each lessons sequentially, you’ll work through a program designed to help you tackle the BA job market with confidence. You’ll benefit in much the same way you would from any other self-study course.

Why didn’t you publish another eBook?

Research shows that adults learn best if they can absorb new information and ideas in multiple ways. While some of you work well with books, the vast majority of adults do not read books. Even I, a book lover, have found that the combination of listening and reading helps me absorb new information much more quickly and act on what I learn. I decided that if I wanted to help the most people, I needed to expand my thinking about how to deliver content.

What are the system requirements?

A standard set of free software will enable you to benefit from all of the workshop materials. If you can listen to music online and read PDF documents, your current system set-up should work. Why are you offering this discount in December? This is a horrible time to apply for a job.

Yes, exactly. December does tend to be a horrible time to find a job. But January tends to see new budgets, new openings and a flurry of activity. The bulk of this course is about how to prepare for your job search. So, if you spend the next 2-3 weeks working through the course and doing the homework, you’ll be leaps and bounds ahead of the other job seekers when the market hopefully picks up in January.

What, there’s homework?

Yes, there is homework. But don’t worry, it’s not busywork. Each topic has homework so that you know if you are on track or not. And I won’t be giving a test. Your real-world job search will be the test. You pass when you find the right business analyst job.

How is this service different from a resume evaluation?

This course leads you through the process I lead my resume evaluation mentees through, but gives you all the content you need to achieve the same results independently. Because you don’t have 1-1 access to me, I can price this much more competitively than my mentoring services.

If you work through the course and decide you would benefit from a resume evaluation or any other job seeking mentoring services, you’ll receive a $50 discount off current rates as a workshop purchaser.

I’ve already purchased How to Start a BA Career, is this different?

Yes. The material in this course is based on Chapter 7 from How to Start a Business Analyst Career but represents a significant expansion. The worksheets, checklists, and extra materials are all new. And the content is greatly expanded to address questions I’ve received about that chapter. Only one topic, lesson 10 on interviewing, represents a substantial overlap with content from the book.

I’ve been a business analyst for a long time, will this help me too?

Yes. Throughout the course I include examples for both new business analysts and senior-level business analysts. The program is designed to help anyone with at least a bit of business analyst experience better position themselves for a job search.

Will this help me plan my whole job search?

This course will help you overcome the number 1 challenge job-seeking BAs face – focusing on the right jobs and positioning their BA qualifications. If you are a new job searcher, you’ll also want to learn about social media, professional networking, and leveraging the “hidden job market.” But these are not specific to business analysis, so the general content should serve you well.  Since this is quite an overloaded market, I’m working on finding a trusted recommendation.

What if I have questions as I’m going through the course?

Each purchaser receives the option to submit 3 questions via email about the course contents or how to apply the material to your specific situation.

When is this going to be available?

For past customers, there will be a pre-launch on December 14, Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. MST. You’ll receive an email with the discount code and the link to purchase. The offering will open up for all subscribers and Bridging the Gap readers on December 15.

How much time will I need to put into this?

Job searches can be a full-time job in and of themselves. Every bit of time you put into this course will help you be more effective in your job search. I’d recommend setting aside at least a few hours each week to go through the material. And you’ll spend more time on the homework when you get to the middle and later lessons on researching the market and crafting your resume. These activities just take time. But the benefit you earn from the time invested is an increased understanding of your qualifications as a business analyst.
