Business Process Mapping Workshop

A Live, Interactive, Virtual Experience

Wednesday, May 15, 2024,

1-4 PM Eastern (Via Zoom)

Do you want to learn how to quick-start just about any project and gain powerful insights into what problem needs to be solved?

Are you looking for a way to get your stakeholders engaged and break down barriers between departments?

Could you benefit from an approach that helps you ask better questions and get to the root cause of issues before you jump into software solutions?

Business Process Mapping is often the first visual model to create when scoping a new project or evaluating what the data is telling us about how to improve our organization. It's the gateway to meaningful business process improvement.

If you are ready to learn how to leverage a Business Process Map to discover, analyze, and improve your business, I've got the perfect training opportunity for you.

When you join the Business Process Mapping Workshop (all virtual -hosted on Zoom), you'll hone your analytical thinking skills, cultivate your process mindset, and simplify complex processes using an easy-to-understand understood visual model.

Create a Process Map to Quick Start

YOUR Project

A Business Process Map is a visual model showing how work flows between people (and sometimes systems) in an organization to achieve a valuable business outcome.

This is a great technique to choose when:

  • Starting a new project or exploring a new domain, to get an understanding of how work is performed and what problems exist in the current state.
  • As part of analyzing potential off-the-shelf software solutions for a right business-fit, or before migrating one system to another.
  • You find your team getting stuck on decisions about what the software needs to do, as a way of stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.
  • There is a problematic process (often with a lot of finger-pointing) and you need to figure out how to fix it.
  • You need to understand any aspect of your business that could use a little fine-tuning.

Here's an example Business Process Map created using a simple set of notations.

The Power of Clear Thinking and Analysis

And while this model may be easy-to-understand, there are some specific nuances that go into getting it right! Nuances like:

  • Having a clear starting and ending point.
  • Making sure all the activities flow from one to the next, and are clear and specific action steps.
  • Getting clear on who does what, or the roles and responsibilities, while not overlooking outside inputs and interdependencies between processes.
  • Mapping out decision points and alternate paths, to ensure all variations are covered.
  • Getting to the right level of detail at the right stage of the project.

And, I could go on!

But the point is that a lot of analytical capabilities go into creating a good process map - these are teachable skills (that sometimes look like magic when you implement them), and you'll learn them in this workshop!

"After reviewing/taking in your original suggestions, I had so much more confidence as well as the ability to “read” previous workflows created for other projects. There were many aha! moments.

I am happy to share a win – I will be creating the workflows and steps going forward for ALL our accounting and underwriting processes, bypassing the vendor's $40K cost. Additionally, the IT Director has requested to work directly with me on the project which is fantastic."

Welcome to the

Business Process Mapping Workshop

I'm Laura Brandenburg. I'll be your instructor and facilitator for this live, virtual, highly interactive event.

When it comes to visual models, Business Process Maps are one of my favorite go-to analytical tools.

  • As a business analyst I've witnessed the most seemingly simple visual model help coax information out of even the most stubborn stakeholders.
  • And as a trainer, I've witnessed thousands of practicing and aspiring business analysts leap forward in their careers by leveraging this simple visual modelling technique to clarify and gain alignment before jumping into the detailed software requirements.

I didn't learn how to do business process analysis until later in my business analyst career. And once I did, it literally changed EVERYTHING.

  • I became more business-oriented.
  • My requirements were more focused.
  • And I could provide better business context to the technical team.

I've now drawn hundreds, if not thousands, of them in my 20+ year career on software projects, and leveraged their power to focus my projects on solving the right problem and clarifying communication.

I've been teaching business analysts, product managers, and even software developers how to draw business process maps for over a decade.

One of my favorite moments is when I see a participant realign their thinking and take a complex mess of activities and turn it into a streamlined process map - and then be able to present it back to their stakeholders and witness them have a similar experience as they see their work in a new way!

I absolutely can't wait to witness YOUR AHA moment when it comes to process maps.

"I thought I was quite competent with workflow diagrams and process maps etc. but the information provided by the course has forced me to review this so-called competency - which is good and confirms that one's BA practical skills are already improving! : )

My main-take away was the additional practical skills that I now have which in-turn gives me confidence in my skills and abilities. My confidence in January was low but as a consequence of my participation on the The Business Analyst Blueprint® course, it is high and I am now optimistic about my chances of securing another BA role soon."

The Business Process Mapping Worskshop is a live, virtual, 3-hour event and, yes, YOU will

draw a process map!

This is practical, real-world training opportunity prioritizing on-the-job application - so you leave the workshop with a properly-drawn process map that's relevant to an active project you are currently working on. This means both you and your employer receive an immediate benefit from your time and financial investment.

But even if you aren't on an active project right now, you can still draw a process map. You'll get a list of opportunities and ideas when you join to help you choose the most beneficial scenario for you.

In the Business Process Mapping Workshop, you'll:

  • Develop your process mindset so you can focus on the right problems and break down barriers between departments.
  • Receive a list of Business Process Mapping Ideas, so that whether you are currently on a project or not, you can identify a process to map during the workshop.
  • Receive a Quick Reference Guide with process mapping symbols and notation for easy future reference.
  • Map a Business Process, step-by-step, with Laura at your side, coaching you through the following elements: scoping your process, swim lanes / roles, activity boxes, lines and arrows, decision diamonds, sub-processes, inputs, and outputs.
  • Have the opportunity for Laura to review snippets of your work as you go and to answer your questions if you get stuck.
  • Learn how to identify and correct process mapping mistakes that create ambiguity, so every process map you draw going forward will be clearer.
  • Engage in a structured peer-review session to receive feedback on your Business Process Map and deepen your confidence by providing feedback to your peers, as well as seeing processes from different domains and types of projects.
  • Earn 3 PDs / CDUs for certification and re-certification needs for the ECBA™, CCBA®, or CBAP® from IIBA®.

The workshop is on Wednesday, May 15, from 1-4 PM Eastern and will be hosted via Zoom.

(A replay, excluding the peer review sessions, will be available if you can't attend live or want to revisit the session. But attending live is highly encouraged for the best experience.)

Fancy Tools Are NOT Required!

The first question I always get when I start to talk about visual modeling is about what software is needed.

I focus on foundational concepts and teach in a tool-agnostic way - that means you get to use ANY tool you have that enables you to create a process map - even if that means pencil and paper!

(Pencil and paper was an early technology, just like the printing press, that transformed how humans communicate - we just don't think about it that way anymore!)

Of course, you can also use modern-day tools like Microsoft Visio, Gliffy, and LucidChart, which have built in templates for all the notations we'll be using (and much, much more).

But I've certainly see BAs use Microsoft Powerpoint and a host of other tools. Whatever you have or have a bit of experience with is absolutely perfect.

A virtual whiteboard would be another great choice!

I'll be demoing in LucidChart and the great news is that LucidChart has a free trial option that will work perfectly for the workshop - so if you don't have a tool already, that's a great place to start.

"I held a workshop with people in the organization so that we could collaboratively document the business process, and then improve it. As a result of this words spread in the different teams. Not even the teams that I, necessarily, worked in, but the teams that are containing the people who I helped the workshop with. People were saying, “Oh, this is really good. It’s really good.”

And what happened was that I contacted the program manager for the project off the bunch of project lists that were related, and he introduced me to another, to a project manager who was thrilled when she heard that I wanted to do business analysis. She was looking for someone to help her. As a result, my manager approved that part of my role would be business analysis going forward. So, it wouldn’t just be support analysis, which was great because that’s what I wanted."

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time should I expect to invest in the program?

This is a 3-hour, live, virtual workshop. You may want to invest a bit ahead of time to prepare and choose a Business Process to map, but otherwise, just plan for the 3 hours.

What's more, when you choose to map a process as part of an active project, the work you do and feedback you receive can be considered part of the work you'd be doing any way.

What are the professional credits?

The PDs and CDUs are professional credits needed toward certification and re-certification requirements for IIBA® such as the CBAP®, CCBA®, and ECBA®.

When you attend the workshop live, you'll receive the details you need to claim your participation.

What tools do I need?

Any visual modeling tool will work - even pencil and paper!

If you already use a visual modeling tool, or have access to one at work, use that tool for the workshop.

If you are looking for a new tool, both Microsoft Visio and LucidChart provide free trials you can use to participate in the workshop.

Do you provide an example for me to use?

Yes. As part of your workshop prep package, you'll receive a list of Business Process Ideas, which include a wide variety of situations.

While we encourage participants to use real-world examples from their actual project work whenever possible, that's not necessary to get a lot out of value out of the workshop.

For example, you can analyze a business process you do personally (like preparing your taxes) or one that you complete at work.

I’m a contractor or have confidentiality concerns, so I cannot use my active project work. How can I complete the course?

Sharing your work and receiving feedback is optional. Peer review sessions will be in small groups.

If confidentiality is a concern, you can blur out or genericize any private information for the purposes of receiving feedback on your work.

I'm not a business analyst. Can I join?

Yes!

This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn more about business process mapping.

Modeling a business process is a widely transferable skill that's relevant to all kinds of roles, such as management consulting, change management, product ownership/management, project management, software development, and more!

I completed my first business process models unknowingly when I created a new test process as a Quality Assurance Engineer.

Processes are literally everywhere. Once you learn a bit about them, you'll won't be able to stop noticing them, and you'll improve your process mindset.

I’d like to speak to someone before I join one of your programs. How can I do that?

We are a virtual organization with team members in multiple time zones and we offer customer and instructor support via email, online communication tools, and pre-scheduled webinar sessions.

We find the best way to communicate with customers prior to making a purchasing decision is using these same tools.

If you have a specific question about our training programs that is not answered on this page, please email us at info@bridging-the-gap.com and we’ll reply as soon as we possibly can.

Can I pay in different installments or get an extended payment plan?

While we are not offering a payment plan option, there are options below to apply for payment plan and Buy Now / Pay Later options through Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna.

I have a question that isn't answered here.

If your question is still not covered in the FAQs here, send us an email at info@bridging-the-gap.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

What if I've already been part of The Business Analyst Blueprint or another course?

We'd love to have you join! While Laura will be teaching similar content to the Process Flow Diagram lesson of The Business Analyst Blueprint in this workshop, it's common for new information and insights to surface in a live, interactive format.

What's more, the opportunity to be guided step-by-step through drawing a process map by Laura live and also take part in the peer review sessions is a unique element of this workshop.

Can I get a refund?

No. Once you join, we're holding your spot and refunds are not available.

If your schedule changes and you cannot attend, a replay will be provided so you can still go through the workshop content.

Can I map a business process for my project?

Yes! The whole point of this workshop is to help you map a business process that could be actually used on a project.

Feel free to bring your active project work to the workshop.

(And if you don't have an active project, don't worry - we'll give you plenty of ideas for finding a business process to map so you can get the most from the session. They are literally everywhere once you start looking!)

I've drawn business process maps before. Will this workshop help me?

If you are practically drawing process maps in your sleep, this may not be the best investment for you.

But if you've created a lot of process maps and still feel like something is off, or there is something you are not quite getting right about them, then this workshop would be a great way to hone your skill set.

There is something different about writing in a guided experience, and in community, and having the opportunity to ask for clarification as you go.

What's more, I've witnessed professionals with a fair amount of business process experience receive unexpected AHAs from the way I teach them, and how I incorporate key textual elements into a visual process model to provide more focus and clarity.

This workshop would also be a great place to work through a tricky process map or a requirement you've been struggling with.

What's more, you'll also benefit from providing feedback in the peer review groups, as this is a great way to stretch your skill set.

I've never drawn a process map before. Will I feel behind?

No prior experience is required! I'll be breaking down how to draw a process map step-by-step and so you'll learn to model one as you go through the workshop.

Beginners are most certainly welcome and encouraged to participate.
